Picture by Dr. Richard MurrayPine forest once streched across Britain and Europe - a living growing monument from that time is the Black Wood of Rannoch - a magical place in Highland Perthshire, part of the Tay Forest Park. It's easily accessible on a network of paths which start at Carie, where there are a car parking, conveniences and picnic areas.
The Black Wood of Rannoch is thought to be about 400 years old, and is home to a wonderful variety of plants and wildlife, including deer, pine martens and red squirrel. The bird life includes tits, siskins, woodpeckers and wrens; you might also be lucky enough to see Scottish Crossbills.
